Basic Elements of Graphic Designing
After mastering these 7 basic elements of graphic designing you are going to take your piece of art to the next level. Seven basic elements of graphic design are line , shape, type , texturte , colour, image , space.
so lets discuss one by one about these basic elements .
1. line
Line is simply a connection between two points. It may be differ in its length, weight, and its matter of context . It is used to give a simple form, convey emotion and to grab a attentipn of a viewer. A designer has its own free will to use a line . A designer can use the line in different ways. It can be vertical, horizontal,curved, freeform, zigzag , solid or broken . line provides design a unique direction. Heavier line is used to provide a message of threats. Scribble provides a message of confusion or excitement and wavy provides a message of uncertainity or beauty. Even a simple line is more powerful to change the message and theme of a design so a designer must be more careful while using line in a design.
2. shape
A shape is a area containing a boundary or closed outline. Shape is further divided into two parts.
1. Geometric shape :- They are 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional figure that are joined together by straight or curved line and simplistic. Geometric shapes includes triangle, rectangle , circle , ellipses, hexagon , cubes, spheres and many more .
2. organic shape :- They are well defined shapes that may be symmetrical or Asymmetrical. These includes natural shapes like leaves, shape of a cloud , shape of a river , etc.
Rectangle or square shape usually convey the message of balance and strength. Rounded shape convey the message of friendship, positivity , love and harmony. Triangle is associated with religion, science , culture and power.
You can experiment a lot on your shapes to create a different fun arts. Shapes are always preffered by all the designers to convey their message to the viewers.
3.Colour
Colour is the most powerful tool to speak with your audience. It deliver a emotion of a design to the viewers. It represents the mood of the design. In graphic design colours are grouped into different categories.
A. primary colours :- You cannot create red, blue & yellow colours by mixing different colours . so they are kept under primary colours but you can create different shades of colours by combining them .
B. Secondary colours :- Mixing of red and yellow create orange colour , blue and red makes purple & yellow and blue Green. So , orange , purple and green are considered as secondary colours.
C. Tertiary colours :- red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet and red-violet. These 6 colours can be created by mixing primary and secondary colours.
While you chose a colour for your design you should understand the theme of a design and the psychological effect it can create in a audience. You have to chose shades and tints of a colour according to the mood of a design .
You should combine two or more colours in your design in such a way that one colour must complient another in a design.
For e.g. to create a contrast you can write text in yellow colour with black background.

4. Texture
It is a feel of a surface. It may be rough , smooth , fury ,soft, etc. Designer use texture to pass a message to the viewers that how it might feel while touching it in a real life . Texture can make your design more professional and polished. There are many ways of using texture in a design. If you are creating a design that relates to the nature you can use natural texture like leaf, bark , smokes, etc in your design. Texture along with Good typography create a professional design. You can play with transparency , colour , saturation , of a texture to adjust the mood of the design.
5. Type
While using a font in a design you must be conscious about the type of a typography you are using. Type chnages all the look and mood of a design . You must chose whether the type may be bold or thin , rounded or chrisp according to the mood you want to develop on your design. Thick letters are used to convey the more important message to the viewer while thin are used to convey the less more important message to the audience.
6. Space
It is used to create a breathing room to the design. It gives more balance to the design. It helps to emphasize on the message that you want to deliver to the viewer. Without proper space it become difficult to the audience to read our message. spacing helps to separate or link two objects that are used in a design . When you give proper space to the elements it attract more attention of the audience towards itself .
Positive space means all the space occupied by visual elemnts and negative space reaming all including the background. Designer only focuses on positive spacing but negative spacing also create great emphasis on graphic designing. You must create a harmony between negative and positive spacing for a chrisp result .
7. Image
It is a photograph or illustration used by a designer to grab a attention of a viewer to convey the message . It provides message to the viewer add drama in the design and effect the overall mood of the design. You must find a special place in your design to use your image because it can boost your design and if used in wrong place and in way it detorates all the mood of the design . If you use image propely it can provide you more than you can imagine.
